Diet Suitable for High Cholesterol

An high cholesterol level has been a major cause of worry for a number of people across the world for quite some time. According to research, modifications to our diet can make a huge difference in the health of the heart of a person. There are many ways to reduce the level of Low density lipoprotein LDL and increase the level of HDL in order to reduce our risk of cardiovascular problems.

To take some corrective measures, it is very important to reduce food of animal origin in your diet. It is good to eat lean meats, trimming the fatty edges. Avoid the skin on the chicken totally as it contains saturated fat and cholesterol. To limit the LDL levels in the body, it is good to reduce the intake of saturated fats. Meat eaters usually have higher levels of LDL than vegetarians.

Next important thing is to increase the amount of fiber in your diet. This prevents the absorption of fat and cholesterol. A High fiber diet also lowers the LDL cholesterol levels. It is advisable to eat one and a half cups of high fiber food such as oats and oat bran everyday.

This will give you enough fiber to reduce the cholesterol levels. Whole oats is a nutritious food. It is advisable to soak these overnight and have a creamy and satisfying dish of oatmeal in the morning.

The fifth point is to have fresh vegetables and fruits in either  cooked or raw form. These are heart healthy foods. These heart foods include broccoli, garlic, ginger, kale and so on. It is also good to have Chinese greens and lemons.   

The sixth point is to source protein from pulses, legumes and beans. It is good to have legumes which form a good source of low fat vegetable protein. These foods help you to maintain minimum calorific levels. The seventh point is about increasing the consumption of fish. The last but not the least is to cut down consumption of coffee and foods made from refined flour as these foods increase the LDL levels.
