Diet to Lower Cholesterol

A Cholesterol lowering diet requires you to avoid foods that are rich in cholesterol and saturated fats. It is generally believed that in order to reduce blood cholesterol, you have to reduce the consumption of foods rich in cholesterol and fat. If you have high cholesterol, your physician will surely prescribe you a diet to lower cholesterol.

Such a diet requires that you not to consume foods rich in saturated fats. It is safe and advisable for you to eat foods and oils that are rich in unsaturated fats. Instead of foods with simple carbohydrates, you should consume foods with complex carbohydrates as these foods have more of fiber. Fiber helps you to reduce the amount of dietary cholesterol that your system absorbs.

Foods such as dairy products, meats with visible high fat and eggs are very high in cholesterol. Have the low fat versions of dairy foods instead of the regular full fat versions. Substitute red meat with poultry or buy lean cuts of meat. If you cannot resist eggs, then avoid the yolks absolutely. The egg whites are harmless.

Fish such as mackerel, tuna, sardines and salmon are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA that help to reduce LDL cholesterol and have an antithrombotic effect.

Increase your consumption of whole grain cereals and bread made from such cereals. Certain nuts and seeds such as walnuts, flaxseed and almonds contain essential fats that help to lower your LDL cholesterol.

Even after going through low cholesterol diet, if you are unable to reduce your high cholesterol, you may be prescribed cholesterol medication to reduce cholesterol, along with your low-cholesterol diet and regular exercise.
