Foods That Help To Lower Cholesterol

There are certain foods that help in lowering cholesterol and thus help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. These foods lower elevated blood cholesterol levels thus reducing the chances of arterial plaque deposits and ensuring that there is free flow of the blood to the heart.

Consuming these foods can help you to reduce high cholesterol levels to a very large extent and in some cases a diet of such foods can effectively replace medication.  Some of these foods are rich in fiber and reduce the assimilation of cholesterol during digestion, whereas other foods increase the level of HDL or good cholesterol in the blood. HDL cholesterol in turn helps to reduce the level of LDL or bad cholesterol.

Here is a list of foods that help to lower cholesterol:

* Cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna are very rich in essential fatty acids or EFAs. EFAs help to reduce the LDL or bad cholesterol in the blood and help to keep the heart functioning well.

* Apples reduce the risk of heart disease by fifty percent. At least, two apples a day are recommended.

* Garlic helps in thinning the blood and decreasing the bad cholesterol. This prevents clogging of the arteries.

* Onions increase the HDL level by 25 percent and reduce the LDL level.

* Beans as well as Legumes contain water soluble fiber. Pinto beans, kidney beans, green lentils, black-eyed beans and pink beans are very helpful in lowering cholesterol over a period of time and should be consumed regularly.

* Unsaturated fats that are available in vegetable oils such as corn, olive and  sunflower oil help to reduce the blood cholesterol level. These oils should be consumed as a medium of cooking, in place of fats such as butter, lard or margarine.

* Mono unsaturated fats found in olive oil, peanut oil, canola oil and almond oil and poly unsaturated fats found in corn oil etc raise the HDL cholesterol in your body and deduct the LDL cholesterol in the blood.
