The Importance of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids which cannot be synthesized by our body. Omega-3 fatty acids are mainly obtained from the food we eat. This group of nutrients helps to reduce cholesterol and to keep the heart functioning properly.

Omega 3-fatty acids are mainly of three types found in the food you take and that is used by your body. They include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The body through various processes changes ALA to the other two readily usable types of omega acids called ALA and EPA.
