| Relationship between Alcohol and High Cholesterol Levels |
|
Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is manufactured by the body and is found in certain foods, mostly of animal origin.
Is there any relation between alcohol and cholesterol levels? Is it safe for people with high cholesterol levels to consume alcohol? Have such questions ever occurred to you? Medical research indicates that a moderate amount of alcohol increases the HDL cholesterol levels in the blood. The underlying word here is moderate. Moderate alcohol consumption helps to reduce the risk against cardiovascular disease (CVD) by as much as 25 to 40%. The nominal amount of alcohol for a woman is one drink a day and two drinks a day for men. It has been found out that the people consuming moderate amounts of alcohol have a lower risk of heart diseases than teetotalers. However alcohol is not a magic wand or a cure for a high risk of CVD. A teetotaler who has a healthier lifestyle and get regular exercise may have a reduced risk of CVD as compare to a moderate drinker who leads a sedentary lifestyle. Related Articles |
