How to Lower your Triglycerides Levels

Elevated levels of triglycerides are a serious health risk and can cause coronary artery disease and cardiovascular disease. Even if you have low cholesterol count, high triglycerides levels by itself can contribute to atherosclerosis or blockage of arteries. If you have high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, then your chances of developing heart disease increase manifold.

There are a number of steps that you can follow in order to reduce your triglycerides levels. The first and foremost is to make modification to your diet. Change the content of your diet. Increase the amount of lean protein and reduce the amount of carbohydrates in your diet. Switch from simple carbohydrates that are high on the glycemic index to complex carbohydrates that are low on the glycemic index. Avoid foods that contain large amounts of simple sugars.

Make sure that the total calories that you get from fats in your diets are less than 30%. Replace saturated and Trans fats with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that are found in foods such as olive oil, fish, shellfish, walnuts, peanuts and certain vegetable oils.

Increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet. These foods are good for you as they contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals and are a known store of powerful anti-oxidants.

If you lead a sedentary life or are fond of curling up on the couch with a large bag of potato chips, then change your lifestyle. Get at least 30 minutes of moderate to heavy exercise everyday. Quit smoking and moderate your intake of alcohol.
