Fibrates- Medicines of this group aim at reducing cholesterol level and Triglycerides. They may even lead to increase in HDL which is not harmful. Gemfibrozil and Fenofibrate are two popular medicines of this group.

Cholesterol absorption inhibitors- This forms a new addition to cholesterol controlling medicines. It helps in absorption of excessive cholesterol by the intestine. This way, it keeps a check over excess cholesterol deposition in the blood. Ezetimibe is one medicine of this group that has gained considerable acceptance among people.

Bile acid sequestrants- It's an effective cholesterol reducing agent. With the help of this medicine, excess cholesterol in the body comes out through excretion. Colestipol and Cholestyramine are two acids in use to serve the purpose.
