The word ‘Cholesterol’ mostly makes a shiver run down your spine. You start to think about your cardiovascular health and the ailments that could follow. However, a lot of people have wrong notion about cholesterol. It is not always harmful as there is good cholesterol as well.

Cholesterol has both good and bad effects on your body. It is more important to know what cholesterol is and what are its effects on your health and how can you manage the blood cholesterol levels. You need to understand the facts about cholesterol so that you can take care of your heart and reduce the cardiac risk.

Cholesterol has a good side too, because certain body functions cannot be performed in its absence. However, the rise in the amount of cholesterol ratio in blood vessels results in clogged arteries thus increasing the chances of a heart stroke.

What is the use of cholesterol?
Every human body needs cholesterol to carry out certain metabolism. Digesting fats, synthesizing hormones, building cell walls, and other important developments are possible only with the help of cholesterol.

The blood carries cholesterol in particle form to supply it to the various body tissues to be used, stored or excreted. Too much circulating of cholesterols injure coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart and this may lead to accumulation of cholesterol-laden plaque in blood vessel linings, which is known as atherosclerosis.

The relation between Cholesterol and Heart Disease
If blood flow to the heart is impeded, the starvation of oxygen in the heart muscles causes chest pain. If increased cholesterol level obstructs a coronary artery by clogging it, a heart attack may occur. The cholesterol in the blood does ‘good’ as long as it is protected with the right antioxidants, and is present in the right ratio.

A good cholesterol ratio means a right balance of cholesterols in the blood. The two main forms are LDL and HDL and they must be present in the right amounts. You cannot have too much or too less of any of the two.

It is not at all difficult to follow a diet to lower cholesterol. Add plenty of fruits and vegetables to your dietary plan. Lower the intake of saturated fats that could raise the risk of cardiovascular problems. Avoid partially hydrogenated vegetable oils since they increase the amount of LDL.

Try to get rid of the saturated and trans-fats in your food and prefer healthful unsaturated oils. You should keep off the lipids in dried milk and old cheese, cake mixes, or storage meats should be avoided.
