How Does The Body Use Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is usually considered to be a harmful substance and hence it is shunned. However, what people do not know is that cholesterol is an extremely essential product. In fact, it is so important that its required amount is manufactured by the human body. It is produced inside the liver and from there it is taken to different parts of the body through blood stream.

Body's Requirement for Cholesterol
The body requires cholesterol essentially for three purposes: for production of hormones, of Vitamin D and for production of bile. Cholesterol is necessary for the production of the following hormones:

* Aldosterone: Cholesterol is required for the production of an important hormone called Aldosterone. This hormone is responsible to retain water and salt inside the human body.

* Cortisol: Cortisol is an important hormone which is responsible to defend the body against infection and also regulate the blood-sugar levels in the body.

* Steroid Hormones: Cholesterol is a basic requirement for the production of steroid hormones (such as testosterone, progesterone, estrogen). Steroid hormones are responsible to bring about changes in the body. Further, they are also responsible to stimulate sexual impulses in the human body, which eventually serve the purpose of procreation.

Production of Vitamin D
Apart from being responsible for the production of hormones, cholesterol is also responsible for the production of Vitamin D. It is produced in sufficient amounts when the body is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D is required to strengthen the bones and teeth.

Production of Bile
Lastly, cholesterol is required for the production of bile in the body. Bile is an extremely strong emulsifier that is required to absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, D, E, and K. It is produced inside the liver and is then stored in the gall bladder for use during the digestion of food.

Bile is not only responsible for digestion of fat-soluble vitamins. It is also responsible to absorb cholesterol from the blood stream and thereby create a balance in cholesterol levels in the body. As a matter of fact, it is a highly important aid in the absorption of fat from the food that is eaten by people. Without it, the fats eaten in a meal would simply be expelled from the body.

So, Where Should You Source Cholesterol From?
It has been proved beyond doubt that cholesterol is important for the survival and maintenance of the human body. But, if you want to ask about the sources from which cholesterol can be derived, then you are inviting trouble. The amount of cholesterol needed by the body for all purposes is produced by the liver and it does not need to be supplemented from outside sources. In fact, dietary cholesterol can cause negative impact upon health. Hence, it should be avoided.
