All About VLDL Cholesterol

LDL and HDL cholesterol are not the only types of cholesterol. There is VLDL cholesterol too. Here is all that you needed to know about this cholesterol type.

VLDL is bad cholesterol
Like HDL and LDL, VLDL is also a type of cholesterol. This cholesterol type can be labeled as bad cholesterol like LDL. The reason for the same is that VLDL contains high amount of triglycerides, which is essentially a blood fat. High VLDL in the body is linked to an increased rate of coronary artery diseases.  Thus, it is important to keep your VLDL in check.

Different types of lipoproteins
Cholesterol can essentially be segregated into three categories- HDL, LDL and VLDL. Each of these is a mixture of triglycerides, protein and cholesterol. However, the composition of one varies from the other. For instance, HDL is high on protein and low on cholesterol, where as LDL is high on cholesterol and low on protein. VLDL, on the other hand, is high on triglycerides, which is a blood fat.

Know your VLDL
Since VLDL is linked to an increased risk of coronary artery diseases, it becomes important to keep your VLDL levels in control. The first step in this direction would be to know your VLDL levels. However, measuring VLDL is not easy. This is because there is no direct method to measure VLDL.

Typically, VLDL is calculated as a percentage of the amount of triglycerides present in your blood stream. Your VLDL level should ideally fall between 5 and 40 milligrams per deciliter. In case your VLDL levels are higher than 40 milligrams per deciliter, you may be at a risk of coronary artery diseases and coronary attacks too.

Keeping your VLDL levels in control
If you do not want to deal with serious health risks like coronary artery diseases then it is important that you keep your VLDL levels in control. Since VLDL levels are proportionate to the amount of triglycerides present in your blood stream, lowering triglycerides levels will help bring down VLDL too.

Some simple lifestyle changes can help you with this. Firstly, you need to switch to healthier eating. Give away all the junk food. Instead, switch to healthier foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. Also, make sure that you say no to alcohol and other sugary foods as these foods are known to increase the triglycerides levels.

Further on, regular exercise is also important. If you cannot make it to the gym every day, make sure that you brisk walk for at least 30 minutes every day. Further on, losing weight also helps keep your VLDL in control.

Now that you know all about VLDL cholesterol, make sure that you keep it in control and avoid numerous health issues.
