High Cholesterol In Young Adults

Heart disease is no longer looked upon as an affliction that affects the elderly. Rising cholesterol levels in the young have also made them highly susceptible to this ailment. As a result, a two year old infant or a 19 year old young adult is as vulnerable to heart diseases as middle aged or old person.

Recent studies have shown an alarming rise in the cases of young adults with high levels of cholesterol. In fact, this condition is said to affect about 1/3 of all young adults in the U.S. alone. These children and young adults are at a greater risk of developing heart disease as they grow older. Thus, most experts recommend a check up for children as young as 2 years of age, if they have a parent with high cholesterol levels.

Several causes have been identified as triggers for high blood cholesterol in young adults. Genetic predisposition is considered to be one of the leading reasons for the same. In most cases, people with high cholesterol levels usually have a parent suffering from the same ailment. Young adults are also more likely to indulge in junk and high fat foods; which can increase their risk of suffering from the disease considerably

Bad food habits or eating patterns can cause obesity in children. These overweight young adults are more likely to develop high cholesterol levels as compared to those with ideal body weight. Playing video games indoors or watching television, instead of going out and getting adequate exercise may also contribute to elevated levels of cholesterol.

In certain severe cases; young adults are prescribed medication to deal with high cholesterol and associated symptoms. However, simply adhering to a proper diet and exercise regimen can help control the condition and its associated symptoms equally effectively.

A decreased intake of saturated fats as well as cholesterol rich foods can go a long way in managing the ailment. Ideally, only 30 % of your overall calorie consumption should come from fats. If you or your child has high cholesterol; consult with a qualified physician or nutritionist for further guidance on effective management techniques for the same.

30 minutes of cardio at least three times a week can help keep your heart healthy and your cholesterol levels in control. Biking, swimming and walking are all very conducive to your health. Also, try and detach yourself from the television by limiting your viewing duration to two hours for added fitness.  

Medications should only be prescribed to young adults with very high levels of LDL or bad cholesterol. Left untreated, this particular cholesterol type can block the arteries of the heart. Medication is also recommended for patients with early heart disease or diabetes.

So, if you have a family history of heart diseases or high cholesterol levels; it would be prudent to get screened for the same immediately. Early diagnosis coupled with healthy lifestyle habits can help you keep heart issues at bay indefinitely.
