Importance of Cholesterol Tests

Cholesterol testing involves  blood test that involves the measurement of the total levels of lipids fatty present in the blood.

Cholesterol testing and a routine physical examination of the body are recommended for all adults at least once in every five years. These tests will determine the lipids in the blood and help the physician to make a diagnosis. Cholesterol tests or lipid profile tests as they are better known, measure the levels of LDL, HDL and triglycerides in a clinical sample of blood. Lipid profile tests are recommended to be carried out more often for individuals who are either susceptible to high blood cholesterol or have reported positive for high LDL or triglyceride levels.

Cholesterol should always be measured when a person is in a healthy condition, because the level of cholesterol in the blood comes down during acute illness or immediately after a heart attack or after a stressful condition.

It is not necessary for you to fast when you are take a lipid profile test because blood cholesterol does not changes due to a single meal. It however does change in response to changes in eating habits, such as shifting from a high fat to a low fat diet. The changes are however noticeable after several weeks.

Private and public sectors institutions such as hospitals, clinics and health care centers have facilities for carrying out of lipid profile tests. Private tests can be carried out by your healthcare provider, whereas public tests may be organized in schools, community centers, churches or at your neighborhood clinics. The tests should be provided at easily accessible places  and at reasonable costs.

Cholesterol testing is very important for each and every one of us, especially for individuals above the age of 35.  These tests can help doctors to predict likely cardiovascular problems and to recommend changes in diet and medication to patients.
