Get Your Cholesterol Levels Tested

A simple blood test is all that you need to check for your cholesterol levels. The test is called a fasting lipoprotein profile. It is used to measure the levels of total cholesterol, good cholesterol and bad cholesterol along with the level of triglycerides present in the blood. Thus, the test is focused on measuring the total amount of fats present in your body that could block the arteries and cause further complications.

A fasting blood cholesterol test is the best way to measure cholesterol levels in an individual and thus look for the presence of any risk of heart diseases.

How do you need to prepare for the test?
For a fasting blood cholesterol test do not eat anything for almost 9 to 12 hours prior to the test. You could just have water, tea or coffee, without cream or milk. Also, incidents like a recent injury or surgery, illness or pregnancy or a recent major change in your diet could affect your results. In case of happening of any of these incidents, your doctor is all likely to reschedule your test on a later date.

How is the test done?
It is a very simple test wherein the doctor would take a sample of your blood from your arm. The blood would later be analyzed at a lab.

How are the results read?
If you have had a fasting test then your HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides levels would all be analyzed. However, if you have had a non-fasting test then the total cholesterol level and the HDL level would only be studied. If your total cholesterol level stands equal to or higher than 200 mg/dL and your HDL stands lower than 40mg/dL, you must ask your doctor to get a fasting test done.

How often do I need to get the test done?
A healthy individual must get the test done at every 5 years. However, if you have high levels of cholesterol then a routine test at regular prescribed intervals is important while you are under treatment. It is important to get the test done at this time to judge the efficacy of the prescribed medications so that changes, if any can be easily recommended.

Thus, getting your cholesterol levels tested at regular intervals can save you from a lot of advanced health problems. It is very important to be vigilant about this aspect of your health so that you may not have to bear with serious repercussions. So, get your cholesterol levels tested once in a while for sure!
