Vitamin B3: A Natural Supplements to Lower Cholesterol

People with a tendency towards heart disease need to lower their cholesterol levels. This is because cholesterol deposits in the bloodstream impose extra stress on the heart. You need to fight high cholesterol at several levels.

Meeting your doctor is important as also taking the cholesterol medication prescribed by him. On a different level, you can also use herbs and supplements at home under your doctor's supervision to keep cholesterol in control.

One important supplement that can help in lowering of cholesterol in your blood is Vitamin B3 (Niacin). It helps you keep your heart free from cholesterol induced stress in two different ways. On the one hand its intake helps to lower low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol deposits in your blood.

On the other hand, taking Vitamin B3 as a dietary supplement also helps you increase the level of good high density lipoprotein (HDL) in your bloodstream. HDL in the bloodstream removes LDL cholesterol deposited in your blood vessels. It forms a cocoon around the LDL cholesterol and transports it to the liver for disposal.

Another advantage of taking Vitamin B3 is that it helps lower the level of triglycerides in the bloodstream. Studies have shown that Vitamin B3 helps lower LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream by approximately 10 per cent. It also helps lower triglycerides therein by 25 per cent. It helps to raise the level of HDL in the bloodstream by approximately 15 to 30 per cent.

Another benefit that Niacin has for your health is that it helps lower lipoprotein A in your bloodstream. Lipoprotein A is a variant of LDL that is formed after damage caused to blood vessels because of free radicals. The variant is responsible for atherosclerosis, which is the thickening or hardening of arteries.

Remember that you need to take the prescribed form of Niacin or any other supplement always under your doctor's supervision, because any of them can cause side effects. Other supplements that you can use include coenzyme Q10, red yeast rice, pantothine, garlic, and policosanol.

You can also profit by using some herbs to lower your blood cholesterol levels. The effective cholesterol lowering herbs include artichokes, fiber containing plant products, and plant sterols and stanols.

Artichoke leaf extract has shown promise in lowering cholesterol in the blood. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol in the body. Cholesterol disposal in the liver is speeded up by efficient bile production and also its flow to the gall bladder. It has been found that a compound known as cynarin in the artichoke plant helps to increase the speed up the production and flow of bile. Thereby it helps in efficient excretion of cholesterol excretion from the body.

Food items that contain soluble fiber help reduce the cholesterol absorption rate in the intestines. Psyllium powder, barley, oats, and oats as also peas, beans, carrots, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and yams are a source of soluble fiber. Even eating apples, berries, and prunes provide the cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber benefits.
